Extending Patio Season in Kelowna

There’s a certain excitement about being in Kelowna for the first time during the fall. We’re usually back in Montreal this time of year so it’s like we’re seeing the city (and our property) through new eyes as the seasons change.

While we’re not quite ready for winter yet, we are embracing all of the cozy vibes of fall.  Between a busy summer and some last minute finishes on our landscaping with the renovation, I feel like we didn’t really get a chance to enjoy our patio this summer. I’m determined to extend our patio season a bit longer this year while we have the chance.

Here are some ways we’ll be doing that:

OVERHEAD COVERAGE:

We built out our BBQ and seating areas such that we can still enjoy this space on colder days. We have a pergola covering the main entertaining area of our backyard and around the fun house, so that’s helpful in protecting our patio furniture against some of the elements in the colder months.  Anything that extends BBQ season for us is a must for us.

PROPER FURNITURE:

Speaking of furniture, I shared this with most of you on my Instagram Stories, but we went with Hauser Furniture for most of our patio furniture and we love it so much. The Nova Sofa is so nice. When we first moved in we were waiting for our living room sofa to arrive and we actually used the Nova Sofa Set in there temporarily and it was so comfortable. I’ll show some of our pieces below and link them if you click on the photos.

I love the look of the Lollygagger chairs. Not only are they a modern spin on the classic Adirondack chair, but they’re also built to stand the test of the weather all year round. For the other items, we made sure to buy the covers for our furniture so that we can winterize them properly once the weather truly gets too cold to entertain in that space. We made an investment into quality outdoor furniture knowing that these are items we really want to last from Spring to Fall for years to come. Longevity of our patio furniture was a top of mind concern for us when we were shopping.

FIRE PITS:

Another feature of our backyard we’re excited to use now is our fire pits.

We actually have two fire areas in our backyard but with all of the wildfire issues this summer, we didn’t have a chance to use them. Fall feels like the perfect time. There’s one area just off the master bedroom/living room, and another fire pit area down by the fun house. We’ll be taking the kids out there a bit more this fall so we can take in the warmth of the fire in the fresh air. The kids love it and so do we!

LIGHTING:

One last way I go about extending patio season is via lighting. With the fire pits around, the backyard is a great place for night time entertaining. Ensuring we have proper lighting to get us from seating area to the house was a no brainer during the design process. Then it’s just to add some ambient tealights on some of you tables to use while entertaining or relaxing. You can’t see them through our daytime photos here but I shared a sneak peak of my favourite cozy corner of our backyard in this reel and you’ll see them on the table.
