Snacks, Snacks and More Snacks

There has been some recent reports on heavy metals being found in baby foods. I feel like everyone has been talking about it, so I wanted to put together a little post talking about our kids and the food we choose.

It is important to remember there are definitely some options better than others when it comes to the food we give our babies, but heavy metals can be found just through environmental contaminations, so even organic foods can contain heavy metals. For our kids, we try to give them a variety of healthy foods and maybe give less of the known foods that can contain a lot of contamination. For example, we eat rice less often than other grains due to the higher levels of arsenic. Rice has higher levels of arsenic than other foods, in part because as rice plants grow, the plant and grain tend to absorb arsenic more readily than other food crops. This is why, with my kids, we bypass the rice cereals and opt for avocado for babies first solids.

However, it is not just baby food that we have to keep an eye on. Foods we are giving our growing children and ourselves can be harmful! We need to be on the lookout for crops sprayed with glysophalate (an ingredient found in Round Up), artificial flavors, artificial colors (consumption of foods containing dyes could increase hyperactive behavior in children), high fructose corn syrup, bleached flours, hydrogenated oils, the list goes on and on. It is super overwhelming, especially when you are just getting started on the journey of cleaner eating. So to help, I am just sharing some of our favorite “clean snacks” that the kids (and us adults) love! Obviously, non processed food is always best, but if you have a toddler you know the importance of having a pantry (and a diaper bag) full of snacks at all times.

With these snacks, you can feel confident about the ingredients going into your family’s bodies. It’s not always just about healthy eating, but about eating cleaner and making sure that your little ones aren’t ingesting anything that may harm them in the future! Of course, these are just our choices, but there are many more great snacks for kids on the market. If you have a favorite, leave it below so that we can help other moms and dads in search of cleaner snacks!

Much Love,
