Summer Hockey Series: Q&A with Kayla Price

Kayla Price Hockey Q&A Nashville Predators NHL

I am starting a new series! Since experiencing hockey in the summer is a first, and probably a last, I was curious what other wives around the league thought about it and what their plans were. I reached out to friends from different teams and did a little Q&A with them to share with you guys. Kicking off this series is my beautiful, talented, super funny sister-in-law, Kayla Price. Her fiancé Yanick Weber plays for the Nashville Preds and they are gearing up for camp starting next week.

I use to joke that Kayla was your stereotypical Canadian, not a mean bone in her body. In all the years I have known her, I don’t think I have heard her say a negative thing. Well, if she has it’s so witty that it doesn’t really count. She always keeps us laughing - I’m pretty sure Carey thinks she is the funniest person he has ever met and LOVES that Liv is taking after her in all her silly traits.

Hockey in the summer! What does this look like for you and your family? If you are living in the city with your boyfriend/hubby are there certain rules the team is recommending?

This has been a crazy year! Yannick and I were supposed to get married at the end of June but we’ve had to postpone until 2022. I always joke that at least it gives me a few more years to get in shape. While he’s gone, I’m hoping to train for another marathon and hopefully run a race in the spring depending on how things are looking with quarantine restrictions, etc.

That sucks your wedding is postponed. . . can you give us any details of the wedding? What’s the vibe? Big or small?

Yeah it isn’t ideal but we’d rather postpone and make sure everyone can make it than not have our ideal day. Our wedding planner, Jessica Hume of Petite Pearl Events is literally the best and I don’t know what sorcery she holds, but she has made the postponement completely painless and so easy. We’re having our wedding at the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish and it’ll be small with about 50-60 people.  The main things we want to focus on are the food and to be able to enjoy every guest we invite.

How did you and Yannick meet?

It’s crazy because Yannick and Carey used to be roommates on the road while Yannick played in Montreal but we didn’t know each other at the time. Fast forward to the 2014 Olympics in Russia. My parents and I spent a lot of time with Yannick’s parents during the trip so we were all sitting together in the family lounge when Yannick came in after a game and we were briefly introduced. We went on our first date in Vancouver where we both got violent food poisoning and we’ve been together ever since.

Is there something you look forward to when the guys are gone? (For example less cooking, bed to yourself, etc.)

I have to food palate of a 13 year old boy. When the guys are on the road, I could live off pop tarts, Oreos and cereal alone and you bet that’s exactly what I’ll do.

We potentially have a fall season with no hockey, any plans?

We definitely want to go camping with you guys! We’ll also spend some time in Switzerland, which will be great because I’ve never been there in the fall/winter and hopefully we will get to do some skiing.

Favorite part of quarantine with your boyfriend/hubby?

We’ve never spent this much uninterrupted time together. At first, I was a bit worried about how it would turn out being in each other’s space 24/7, but it’s been great.

q7.jpg

Least favorite part of quarantine?

I’m like a child. If you tell me I can’t do something, then I say “you can’t tell me what to do, you’re not my real dad”.  Also, everyone buying up all the toilet paper.

Best or worst part of growing up with Carey?

He was and is the kindest brother in the world. There are home videos of me being a complete bossy brat to him and he was always so sweet. I don’t really have any bad memories about growing up with Carey, other than the fact that he moved out at a really young age to play hockey, so I didn’t see him much.

q9.jpg

Is it hard for you when Nashville plays Montreal?

It used to be but not so much anymore. I think it’s an unspoken rule that I cheer for Carey and Yannick equally. In a perfect world, Carey would get a shut out and Yannick would score but that’s obviously not possible so I just hope for either.

What’s the best piece of advice you have received?

My mom always says that you’re never too old to learn. I never really understood her desire to go to school, but now that I’m an ‘adult’, I see the value in always trying to better myself and educate myself, whether that’s through going back to school and getting my masters in psychology, or educating myself on current issues.

Name 5 things you are loving right now.

  1. Running and hiking with the dogs

  2. Reading: I recommend The Guest List by Lucy Foley

  3. Good Mythical Morning

  4. Buffalo Wild Wings

  5. School!

q12.jpg

What are you going to school for?

I went to university and graduated with a degree in communications a few years back but I really didn’t know what to do with that. Now I’ve finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up- a psychologist. I’d like to work with First Nations people in BC, primarily those who have experienced some sort of emotional and/or physical trauma, and those who deal with substance abuse.
