Summer Hockey Series: Q&A with Veronique Larosee (Fleury)

If you were following my blog last summer, you’ll know that I interviewed a few NHL wives about hockey life during quarantine. I figured today would be a great day to repost the interview with Veronique, as she is the wife of one of the Golden Knights players, Marc-Andre and they are the team we are playing against in the playoffs right now.

This week we are interviewing and getting to know hockey wife Veronique Larosee (Fleury). Her husband, Marc-Andre Fleury plays for the Vegas Golden Knights and they have three small children - Scarlett, Estelle and James. I do not know the Fleurys well. I’ve crossed paths with them a few times at different events, but I always loved Marc-Andres demeanour on the ice and Veronique has always been very sweet, I love following along with her family on Instagram.

HOCKEY IN THE SUMMER! WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY? IF YOU ARE LIVING IN THE CITY WITH YOUR HUBBY, IS THERE CERTAI RULES THE TEAM IS RECOMMENDING? WHEN THE GUYS HEAD TO HUB CITIES, WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Hockey in the summer... who would have thought! But it’s 2020, so nothing is surprising at this point.  I just flew home to Canada with my little ones a couple days before Marc left for the bubble. I knew it would be hard to say goodbye, so I figured getting them excited about a trip home would be a good change of scenery.  We’re in Varennes (south shore of Montreal) in our almost finished summer home. We’re currently in quarantine, so we haven’t seen our friends and family sadly, but very excited to be able to see them soon.

The girls love watching Marc play, but after spending 4 months with him everyday, they would much prefer having him with us right now. They do understand that it’s his job and that it makes him happy to play though, so they’re not too tough on him.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN THE GUYS ARE GONE? LESS COOKING? HAVING THE BED TO YOURSELF?

Meals definitely are bigger and fancier when Marc is around. He is gluten and dairy free, so we’re a bit more flexible when he’s away. Also, I’m excited to have more freedom when we go back to Vegas in mid August. We were very careful before he left to make sure we wouldn’t get infected so I’m looking forward to going to restaurants with some of the other wives.

WE POTENTIALLY HAVE A FALL SEASON WITH NO HOCKEY, ANY PLANS?

Our oldest will be in second grade, so we can’t really plan much other than being in Vegas. Who knows, with so many new cases we wouldn’t be surprised if school went virtual again! If it does, we would most likely come back to Canada for a little bit to be with our friends and family. Although, we would definitely head back to the warmth when it gets too cold. My skin got thin pretty quickly in the last few years. Marc is the only one who still enjoys the cold.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF QUARANTINE WITH YOUR HUBBY?

We’ve been together for more than 18 years now and I’ve never spent this much time with him. It was amazing.  Just the little things, we’re pretty simple people, we enjoy our quiet evenings watching Netflix at home with a good glass of wine.  It was nice to get to do that and not feel like we were missing out on something 🤣 Our 3 kids had birthdays during quarantine and he was there for all of them, which is a treat. James turned 1 in March, he’s obsessed with his dad so it was nice for them to have so much time together!

WHAT DOES THE HOCKEY BUBBLE LOOK LIKE FOR YOUR HUBBY? IS THERE ANYTHING HE DOES IN HIS HOTEL ROOM? PLAY VIDEO GAMES? WATCH YOUTUBE?

He bought an Xbox before he left... a few books and I got a notification today that he subscribed to a Spanish learning app.  I’m hoping he spends more time on that than the Xbox, but I wouldn’t bet much on it!

He also of course needs to remain available for FaceTime when the kids call him, which has been every day so far.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOCKEY MEMORY?

2009 cup for sure! It still gives me chills when I see the last seconds of that game. There are so, so many more amazing memories. The first year in Vegas was like a fairytale story. The ovation Marc received in Pittsburgh when he went back the first time. All the amazing people I’ve got to meet because of hockey, I could just keep going really!

IF YOU HAVE 30 MINUTES FREE, WHAT CAN I FIND YOU DOING?

If I don’t have any typical mom duty to take care of, I usually try to squeeze in a workout when I can. Or I try to get back to my way too many unread messages.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE RECIEVED?

Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened. I’ve been repeating this to myself several times a day lately!

NAME 5 THINGS YOU ARE LOVING RIGHT NOW.

  1. I’m a wine girl. My current favorites are Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Foley Family Pinot Noir.

  2. Local organic bars/cafés.  Obsessed with Fruits and Roots in Vegas and La Station Organique in Quebec.

  3. Tennis

  4. Sunsets on the water at our summer house.

  5. Watching the girls interact with James. They are so obsessed with him and are the best big sisters!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE CITY YOUR HHUBBY PLAYS IN?

I am in love with Las Vegas. The weather is just the best. I love hiking, Lake Mead is just 45 mins away for boating/surfing and in the winter I take the girls skiing less than an hour away.  And of course there are endless options for date nights. It is also an amazing city to raise a family.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU? ANY SOCIAL MEDIA HANDLES OR INITIATIVES YOU WANT TO PROMOTE?
