Working Out With Your Partner to Help Your Relationship

Back in 2016, I did a blog post about working out with your partner to improve your relationship. With everyone being stuck at home, and possibly starting to be annoyed with your partner, I thought it would be a good time to touch back on it.

According to Psychology Today, there are '5 Reasons Why Couples Who Sweat Together, Stay Together' :

1. Increases happiness in your relationship. Studies show that after a couple participated in exciting physical activity together they reported feeling more satisfied with their relationship and more in love with their partner.

2. Improves the efficiency of your workouts. The presence of someone else affects your ability to do an activity - kind of like showing off for your partner. This reminds me of high school gymnastics. I was learning to throw a back tuck off the balance beam and I just couldn't quite get it down. My coach called in a few members of the wrestling team who were practicing next to us to come watch and guess what, I nailed that back tuck! Haha!

3. It makes your partner fall in love with you. Exercise induces symptoms of physiological arousal (sweaty hands, racing pulse, shortness of breath), these are very similar to the thrill of romantic attraction. So, this results in a boost to your attractiveness in his or her eyes.

4. It helps achieve your fitness goal. There was a study done that showed that men who's wives offered supportive health-related comments engaged in more physical activity.

5. Increases your emotional bond. When you do physical activity together you create a situation in which you coordinate your actions. This non-verbal mimicry helps you feel emotionally attuned to your partner. In a study, people reported have greater feelings of having bonded with their partner.

This doesn’t mean you have to hit the squat rack with your hubby ( I definitely wouldn’t keep up with the hubby in the gym) but there are other ways you can get sweating with your partner. I am sharing our top 5 ways we like to get active together.

  1. Play Basketball - this has been a big one for us during quarantine.

  2. Go Hiking - we love hiking around Kelowna, I cant wait to get out there on the trails.

  3. Tennis - like basketball, it is fun to find a sport one of us doesn’t dominate in.

  4. Track Workout

  5. Bike Rides

Of course, what you do to get active together will look different for every couple. It’s just important that you have fun! Challenge yourselves, as a couple, to try at least one activity a week and you just may find that your happiness and love for your partner increases!

Much Love,
